PONTIAC SPORT SAFARI
WOODGRAIN Paneling
 H-BODY PAGE
Pontiac introduced the Sunbird Safari in 1978.  Basically a Pontiac Astre Safari Wagon with Sunbird-specific front facia and badging.  It was identical to the Astre model in every other way.  One of the unique options available was the Woodgrain Paneling for the exterior of the wagon.  Similar to what was found on the Monza Estate Wagon, this paneling was mounted across the entire side of the car, front to back, and along the back hatch all outlined in a lighter piece of trim.  This exterior option was given the RPO Code of BX3 and was not continued over to the 1979 model year.

Unfortunately I have no production numbers for this option, for whatever reason, the BX3 numbers were not included in the 1978 production figures that were acquired from Pontiac. For reference though, production figures that I have for the BX3 Astre are as follows ... 1975 - 4,899, 1976 - 3,479 and 1977 - 2,578.
