EXPLORER 504
Buick Skyhawk
The Explorer Post 504 (Boy Scout Troop) hand-crafted all of the modifications that you can see and that are hidden.  They started with a Buick Skyhawk and after 5 months of hard and tedious work this is the end result.
There were 30 Explorers on this project and several advisors.  GMPD fibreglass body panels were added to change appearance and improve aerodynamics and also to allow the use of larger wheels and tires.  This also increased the front and rear road track.
The Explorer Skyhawk paint theme is hand painted and not a decal.  This was not a race car.  It was an excercise in exploring engineering.
The engine was a 231 cu.in. and had about 275 HP which was accomplished by using the following: Kenne Bell 11:1 aluminum pistons, KB oversized cylinder heads, ported and polished, exhaust headers, Hush-Thrush header mufflers, high performance cam shaft, Rochester Quadra-Jet carb and many more special pieces of equipment.
The above pics were taken in May 1976 by Matt Klee and shared by Andy Popovich who also happens to be the driver in these photos.  Click on thumbnail pics for larger shots.
