The Sunbird Formula special edition package made it's first appearance in the 1977 model year on the Sunbird Coupe. Pontiac's 'Formula' namesake actually started with the Pontiac Firebird back in 1970 and followed the Firebird line throughout the '70's. In 1977 the Formula package was expanded to include the Sunbird and it's sister Pontiac H-Body, the Astre.
This package was initially only available for the Sunbird Coupe but as of March 1977, was to become available on the Sunbird Hatchback as well. Both 1978 ansd 1979 models featured the W66 Formula RPO Code package on both models but for 1980, it was only available for the Hatchback.
The package included a blacked-out grill and front air dam and rocker panel, body colour rear spoiler, Rally wheels and door handle inserts, lower quarter striping with "FORMULA" decals along the base of the doors and on the rear spoiler and a third accent colour stripe immediatly above the lower striping. Also part of this package were dual body colour sport mirrors, custom steering wheel, Rally gauges with Tach, Radial Tuned Suspension and BR70-13 steel-belted radial tires.
For 1980, the Formula graphics were slightly altered, "Sunbird Formula" was decaled above the accent striping instead of "Formula" below the accent striping, on the black lower body.
Formula Accent colour options can be seen below (don't have 1977 info. yet)
