Pontiac offered 3 different striping options for their Sunbird models ranging from subtle slim-profiled stripes to multi-coloured accents. Below will show all 3 options and production numbers for each striping option are at the very bottom of the page.
Accent Stripe
RPO Code D98
The only striping option offered from 1976 to 1980 was the D98 Accent Stripe. It was simply a couple thin stripes travelling from front to back, except on Coupes (see right) where the stripe continued to the roofline behind the quarter window. This striping was offered on all Sunbird models (Hatchback, Coupe and Wagon) in 3 colours; Black, White and Gold.
Safari Wide Body Stripe
RPO Code D85
The Safari Wide Body Stripe was a much larger, bolder stripe compared to the D98 Accent Stripe but was only available on the Sunbird Safari Wagon (without the BX3 Woodgrain side paneling). This striping option ran the entire length of the Wagon. The Wide Body Stripe was available in 4 colours; Black, White, Orange and Blue.
Rally / Sport
Stripe
RPO Code D85
The Sport Stripe (I have also seen it referred to as the Rally Stripe) was a slightly thicker, but much bolder stripe compared to the D98 Accent Stripe . The Wide Body Stripe was dropped when the Sunbird Safari Wagon was no longer available in 1980 so the D85 RPO Code was transferred to the Sport Stripe option. This stripe ran the entire length of the Sunbird and was available on both hatchbacks and coupes. The Sport Stripe was available in 4 colour combinations; Silver, Gold, Blue and Red/Orange. Each colour set included 3 different shades of that colour in the stripe.
