TRIM TAG DECODER
1980 Trim Tags were virtually identical to the '79 tags.  The layout and information stamped on them was the same as the previous year.  The dot you see on the 3rd row, of the tag shown below, represents a slot where a code would be placed if it were needed for that particular car.  Anytime a code is not required in its designated slot, a dot takes its place.  Around the middle of the 1980 model year the trim tag was changed.  It became similar in design to a credit card, rounded corners, flat with no words ('Body by Fisher' no longer present) and some information changed position on the tag.  The redesigned tag will be featured below.

Early 1980 Trim Tags
First Line
80 - Model Year
01D -Build Date. First 2 digits (always numbers) represent the month of manufacture, the last digit (always a letter) represents the week in that month, therefore 01D is the 4th week of January. 
2 - GM line (1 - Chevrolet, 2 - Pontiac, 3 - Oldsmobile, 4 - Buick)
H - H-Body (found on all Trim Tags)
M27 - Car Model (see VIN # Decoder)
7547871 - The 1st digit, 7, represents the Lordstown Assembly Plant while the following 6 digits, 547871, are the Sequential Serial Number (same as last 6 digits of the VIN#)
















Second Line
26G - Interior trim colour and type - This is the main colour of the interior, the accent colour, if any, is found in the 3rd space on the 3rd line (see RPO Code list)
21L - Exterior paint colour (See RPO Code list)
21T - Vinyl roof colour OR Exterior paint colour (See RPO Code list)
06A - Striping or decal colour (See RPO Code list)
L - Lacquer Paint
















Third Line
A51 - Seat Code - Always A51 as the H-Body had no other seat options
CB4 - Reserved for Cabriolet/Cordova RPO Code (See RPO Code List)
26X - Reserved for Interior trim code - This number could be different from the interior trim code number on the 2nd line as this number reflects the accent colour, not the main colour of the interior (See RPO Code List)
SPACE - Only a B has ever been seen in this slot, possible black lower dashboard
98 - Special Edition or Striping designation (always the last 2 digits of the RPO Code, in this case 98 is the last 2 digits of the D98 Accent Stripe. You would have to know or look up the 1st digit of the RPO Code in order to have the correct Special Edition or striping option - See RPO Code list)
















Fourth Line
98 - Represents the week of manufacture.  In this case, due to the car being built the 4th week of January, this 98 would represent the 98th day of production at the plant. This 2-digit code would cycle to 99 then revert back to 00, instead of 100, and so forth.  Production starts the 3rd week of August.

Fifth Line
50 - Represents the week of manufacture.  In this case, due to the car being built the 5th week of August, this 50 would represent the 250th day of production at the plant. This 2-digit code would cycle to 99 then revert back to 00, instead of 100, and so forth.  Production starts the 3rd week of August.  For 1980, Chevrolet extended production till November 26, 1980, producing 34,516 more Monza's between August '80 and Nov. '80.
