TRIM TAG DECODER
TRIM TAG DECODER
The Trim Tag (also referred to as "Body Number Plate") of your H-Body is a 2" x 3" metal tag that is affixed to the horizontal surface of the cowl, under the hood.  The information displayed on the tag slightly changes over the years but essentially shows much of the most important information.  The trim tag was used by the assembly line to ensure the proper colours, trim, paint etc. were applied to the correct body on the line.

The trim tag identifies the model year, car division, series, style, body assembly plant, body number, trim combination, modular seat code, paint code and date build code.  It can also identify decal or striping packages and Special Edition cars.

This page, and the following, will be divided into years and allow H-Body owners to decode their trim tags and any others they may encounter.  This can be especially important in correct restoration and further, being able to verify special editions, striping and other unique items to that particular car.

As far as I know, all H-Body trim tags are located in the same place, at the rear of the engine bay, on the right side of the cowl.  These tags are always metal (aluminum) and are attached to the cowl by 2 large rivets.  The engine bay of my 1980 Spyder shows the location of the trim tag.
